Common questions

How do my saved looks sync between devices?

Looks you save in the Templates tab sync between your iPhone, iPad and Mac through iCloud, with the Apple ID you are signed in with on each device. There is nothing to sign up for. Use the same Apple ID on every device and make sure iCloud is on. Screenshots, recordings and custom backdrop photos are not part of a look and do not sync. If you delete a look on one device it is deleted on the others. Without iCloud, looks stay on the device where you saved them.

Why doesn't the Mac app have the Device and Capture tabs?

The Mac version starts with the mockup tools only: Mockups and About. Device info and Capture are on iPhone and iPad. They may come to the Mac later.

Where are the keyboard shortcuts on the Mac?

Choose Help › Keyboard Shortcuts or press ⌘/. The sheet lists every shortcut and the mouse and trackpad gestures. The same list is in the About tab and behind the keyboard button in the Mockups toolbar.

How do I save a mockup to a file on the Mac?

Press ⇧⌘S (Save As) or use “Save as file” in the Export tab. You choose where it goes and whether it is a PNG or JPEG. Finished videos can be saved the same way. ⌘S saves to Photos instead. To open a screenshot or recording, press ⌘O or ⇧⌘O, or drop it on the window.

Why does the Mac app ask for permission?

The Mac app runs in the App Sandbox. It can only read files you choose in the open panel or drop on the window, and it asks before adding anything to Photos. It never reads your photo library.

Why is there no Fold & Hinge section on my phone?

That section only appears on a device that reports a hinge, which today means iPhone Duo. On other iPhones and iPads it is hidden.

Why does the device name show the model instead of my name?

Since iOS 16, apps can only read the name you gave your device if Apple has approved a special entitlement. Framedevice shows the model name (for example “iPhone Air”) and the system identifier instead.

How does the software update check work?

The Device tab downloads Apple's public list of iOS releases and finds the newest one for your exact model. Nothing about you or your device is sent. If your model is not in the list (for example a device that has not been released yet) no update row is shown, and if you are offline it says it could not check. A pre-release iOS is reported as newer than the latest public release. Apps cannot start an update or open the Software Update screen, so tapping “Update available” shows where to go: Settings › General › Software Update.

Why can't I see battery health or cycle count?

iOS does not give apps access to battery health, capacity, cycle count or temperature. Those are only in Settings › Battery.

Camera or Photos access is not working.

Open the About tab and tap “Camera and Photos permissions” to jump to Settings. The camera is only needed for the Capture tab. Saving mockups and videos needs add-only Photos access.

Can I use Apple's official device frames?

Framedevice draws its own frames. Apple's licence for its design resources does not allow bundling them inside an app, so the frames are original illustrations and will not match Apple's hardware pixel for pixel.

How do I put several devices on one canvas?

Open the Devices tab in Mockups and tap “Add a device”. You can have up to three. Tap a device in the preview, or in the list, to select it: the Frame, Position and Shadow tabs then edit that device, and each device has its own screenshot. Drag, pinch and twist a device in the preview to arrange it, or use the Spacing slider. Swipe a device in the list to remove it.

How do I put a screen recording in a frame?

Select a device, open the Frame tab and tap “Add a screen recording”. It plays in the preview, with play, pause and a scrubber. In the Export tab, “Export video (MP4)” draws the whole mockup frame by frame, so longer recordings take longer. Choosing a new screenshot for that device replaces the recording.

Why does my exported video have no sound, or stop early?

Exported videos do not include audio. Recordings are cut off after 60 seconds, and the video is at most 1920 pixels on its long side, so the large App Store sizes are scaled down. If one device has a shorter recording than another, it holds its last frame.

My export has the wrong size.

In the Export section of the Mockups tab, “Auto” shapes the image around the frame. Choose a preset such as Full HD or Instagram to get an exact pixel size, with the device centred inside it.
